Ethics in Wildlife Photography

posted 18 Apr 2010 23:25 by Quantum Tiger

With the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010 competition now in full swing, BBC Wildlife Magazine has a feature on ethics in wildlife photography, written by Mark Carwardine.

As chief judge of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, Mark Carwardine gets to see more wildlife images than most. In this special feature he considers the rights and wrongs of wildlife photography, and provides food for thought on issues surrounding digital manipulation, photographing captive subjects, using animal models, using bait to photograph wildlife and the recent concerns around camera trapping.

Mark also shares his wildlife photography code of conduct. Here are his key points to remember:
  • Always photograph animals from a safe and respectful distance.
  • If an animal shows any sign of stress, move further back or leave altogether.
  • Be patient and never try to force an animal to do something. Remember that the impact of many people is cumulative: you might be the 100th person that day to yell “Hey moose” while the poor creature is trying to feed or care for its young.
  • Never encroach on nests or dens during the breeding season.
  • Treat the habitat with the same regard that you have for the animals themselves.
  • Respect local cultures and customs when you are working abroad.
  • Check published recommendations, such as the excellent code produced by the Nature Group of The Royal Photographic Society: www.rpsnaturegroup.com
  • Finally, always be honest and truthful when captioning your photos.
The feature, entitled The good, the bad and the ugly, by Mark Carwardine is published in the May issue of BBC Wildlife Magazine, on sale now.

Six months and going strong

posted 23 Feb 2010 05:39 by Quantum Tiger   [ updated 24 Feb 2010 00:59 ]

Wildlife Photography Blogs is six months old today. That is to say that the twitter feed and site analytics have been running since 23rd August 2009. And today I WPB also reached the 1000 follower mark. I have not idea if 200 new followers a month represents a good growth rate or not, but it feels pretty exciting to me.

So what does 1000 followers mean in practice? Not as much engagement as I would have hoped - but according to my bit.ly statistics the WPB twitter feed is generating between 1600-1800 clicks for its member sites every week. That seems like quite a good thing to me! Of course I'm always on the look out for new ways of improving the service, so if you have any ideas do feel free to comment below!
